What to know
Sakaimachi Street (Sakaimachi-dōri) is a beautifully preserved merchant street in central Otaru, just a short stroll from the city's famous canal area. During Hokkaido's development in the late 1800s and early 1900s, Otaru flourished as a port town, and many trading companies built impressive Western-style buildings here to house their offices and shops.
Today, many of those historic buildings along Sakaimachi Street have been transformed into restaurants, cafes, souvenir shops, boutiques, and museums. You'll also find several glass workshops where visitors can try their hand at creating traditional Otaru Glass.
Sakaimachi Street is a ten-minute walk from Otaru Station or a five-minute walk from Minami-Otaru Station.
