Ogi Town

Visitor guide for Ogi Town on Sado Island.

What to know

Ogi Town (小木), on Sado Island's southern coast, is a small port town famous for taraibune—wooden tub-shaped boats originally used to collect seaweed and shellfish. Short taraibune rides are available at Ogi Port and nearby Yajima and Kyojima islands.

This sleepy town comes alive for three days in late August during the Earth Celebration, a global culture and music festival organized by the renowned Kodo Taiko group. Visitors from around the world attend, and Ogi's harbor transforms into a tent city.

Nearby attractions include Sobama Beach and Campground to the north, and Shukunegi, a small village with canal-lined streets to the west. Shukunegi was once a shipbuilding town, and many houses are built from salvaged boat hulls. The village features a boat exhibition hall and preserved residences, about four kilometers west of Ogi's center.

From Ryotsu Port, Ogi Town is about one hour by car.

Take a bus along the Main Line from Ryotsu to Sawata (40 minutes, 660 yen, 1-2 buses per hour), then transfer to the Ogi Line for Ogi (60 minutes, 860 yen, every 1-2 hours). Alternatively, take the Minami Line (55 minutes, 720 yen, every 1-2 hours) and Ogi Line (50 minutes, 860 yen) via Mino-Shinmachi bus stop.

Ogi can also be reached directly by car ferry from Naoetsu.
