Honma Museum of Art

Visitor guide for the Honma Museum of Art in Sakata, Yamagata Prefecture.

What to know

The Honma Museum of Art (Honma Bijutsukan) in Sakata is a cultural gem. Its highlights include a serene Japanese garden, a grand Edo-period villa overlooking it, and rotating art exhibits. The villa's lavish rooms and the garden's timeless beauty evoke the atmosphere of centuries past.

Built in 1813 as a retreat for the head of the Honma family—a wealthy merchant clan—the garden and villa originally served as a holiday home. The traditional strolling garden features a central pond and winding paths that offer ever-changing scenic vistas.

Visitors can explore the atmospheric villa, which houses a cafe and a selection of historical exhibits. Upstairs, a large tatami room with expansive windows provides stunning views of the garden below.

Opened in 1947, the museum was Japan's first private art museum after WWII. The villa served as the main building until a larger concrete structure replaced it in 1968. Today, the museum hosts temporary exhibitions that change every few months, featuring historical artifacts from the region and beyond. Periodic displays from its extensive doll collection are also popular.

The Honma Museum is a five-minute walk from JR Sakata Station.
