Hokkaido University Botanic Garden

Visitor guide for the Hokkaido University Botanic Garden in Sapporo.

What to know

Located near Sapporo's city center, this botanical garden (北海道大学植物園, Hokkaidō Daigaku Shokubutsuen) is owned by Hokkaido University and mainly serves scientific and educational purposes. However, with its walking trails and lawns, it's also a lovely spot to relax or enjoy a non-alcoholic picnic.

Founded in 1886, the Botanic Garden preserves a small remnant of the forest that once covered the Ishikari Plain. It also features an alpine garden, a greenhouse, and a small museum dedicated to the Ainu culture. In winter, only the greenhouse is open to visitors.

The garden is a ten-minute walk southwest of Sapporo Station or a five-minute walk north of Nishi-Juitchome Station on the Tozai Subway Line.
