What to know
Rusutsu Resort (ルスツ) is widely regarded as one of Hokkaido's premier ski destinations. Its expansive ski area spans three mountains, offering a diverse mix of long groomed runs, excellent powder, and tree skiing. The resort sits near Lake Toya (Toyako) and lies just across Mount Yotei from Niseko.
At the foot of the slopes, two large hotels—the Rusutsu Resort Hotel and the high-rise Westin Rusutsu Resort—provide convenient lodging. Several small pensions are also available in the nearby town center of Rusutsu. Beyond skiing, the resort features restaurants, shops, pool facilities, and hot spring baths. Summer activities include golf and an amusement park with over 50 attractions, including seven roller coasters.
During the ski season, a free daily shuttle bus runs between Sapporo (how to get to Sapporo) and the resort. Reservations must be made by 3 PM the day before.
For most of the ski season, Donan Bus and Hokkaido Access Network operate multiple daily buses from Sapporo to Rusutsu Resort, continuing to Lake Toya (Donan Bus) and Niseko (Hokkaido Access Network). Fares differ significantly: Donan Bus charges 2600 yen (book online) for a one-way trip, while Hokkaido Access Network charges 5500 yen. Reservations are required.
Outside winter, only Donan Bus runs between Sapporo and Lake Toya, stopping at Rusutsu along the way.
During the ski season, Hokkaido Access Network also operates buses from Sapporo's New Chitose Airport to Niseko, stopping at Rusutsu. The one-way trip takes about two hours and costs 5500 yen. Reservations are required.
