What to know
Rinnoji (輪王寺, Rinnōji), located north of Sendai's city center, might seem like an ordinary temple at first glance. But behind its main hall lies a stunning Japanese garden and a pagoda that are well worth the visit.
Founded in 1441 by Date Mochimune, a member of the Date clan that later ruled much of northern Japan during the Edo Period, Rinnoji serves as the clan's family temple. It moved to its current location in Sendai alongside the Date family in the early 1600s. All buildings have been recently restored to their original splendor.
Visitors enter the inner gardens through a paid, unmanned gate. Inside, you can stroll along winding paths, admire the koi (carp) in the pond, the three-storied pagoda, and the meticulously maintained plants. Several benches invite you to sit and soak in the serene scenery.
From Sendai Station, take the JR Senzan Line to Kitayama Station (10 minutes, 200 yen). Rinnoji is a 10-minute walk southeast of the station.
