Oharaimachi

Visitor guide for Oharaimachi, the old approach to Ise

What to know

Oharaimachi (おはらい町) is the historic approach to Ise's Inner Shrine. Stretching nearly one kilometer, this street is lined with traditional buildings housing shops and restaurants. Some establishments have been serving pilgrims and tourists for centuries.

Local specialties along Oharaimachi include akafuku ("red happiness"), a sweet made from mochi and red bean paste, and Ise Udon, thick udon noodles in a rich sauce.

About halfway along Oharaimachi lies Okage Yokocho, a district recreating a townscape from the Edo to early Meiji periods. Completed in 1993, it features various shops and restaurants.

Oharaimachi is located right next to the Inner Ise Shrine, a few kilometers from the city center.
