Toba Aquarium

Visitor guide for the Toba Aquarium on the Shima Peninsula, Japan.

What to know

Toba Aquarium (Toba Suizokukan) sits on the waterfront of Toba Bay, right next to Mikimoto Pearl Island. It boasts one of Japan's largest collections of fish and animals, spread across twelve themed zones. You'll find everything from fish, jellyfish, and crabs to amphibians, reptiles, sea lions, seals, seabirds, and otters.

There is no set route; visitors can freely explore the twelve zones. Animal shows and feeding sessions typically occur every hour. Toba Aquarium is also the only aquarium in Japan that houses a dugong in captivity.

The aquarium is a 5-10 minute walk from Toba Station, served by JR and Kintetsu lines. From Iseshi Station, the train ride takes 15 minutes and costs 240 yen (JR) or 390 yen (Kintetsu). Each line runs one or two trains per hour. Direct trains also connect Toba with Nagoya (JR and Kintetsu) and with Osaka and Kyoto (Kintetsu).
