What to know
Takachiho Gorge (高千穂峡, Takachiho-kyō) is a narrow chasm carved through volcanic rock by the Gokase River. The nearly vertical cliffs are formed from basalt columns that twisted and flowed as they cooled, resembling dragon scales.
About halfway along the gorge, the 17-meter-high Minainotaki waterfall plunges into the river below. The sight of the waterfall against the lush greenery and gray cliffs is truly breathtaking.
There are two ways to experience the gorge. From below, you can row a rental boat along the calm river, getting an up-close view of the cliffs and waterfall. This highly recommended route starts at the southern end of the gorge.
From above, a paved walking path runs along the gorge's edge, offering beautiful views. At some points, you can look straight down to the river. The trail stretches about one kilometer and eventually leads to Takachiho Shrine.
Near the southern end of the gorge, you'll find a freshwater aquarium, a stocked fishing pond, restaurants, and souvenir shops. The gorge is illuminated in the evenings from mid-May to November until 22:00.
Takachiho Gorge is a short distance from the town center, about a 30-40 minute walk from the Takachiho Bus Center. You can also reach it by rental bicycle or taxi.
