Shodoshima Island

Travel guide for Shodoshima, the second largest island of the Seto Inland Sea.

What to know

Shodoshima (小豆島, Shōdoshima) is the second largest island in the Seto Inland Sea and one of the first islands created by the gods in Japanese mythology. Its name means "small bean island," originally referring to azuki beans, but today it could just as well refer to soybeans or olives—the island has a long tradition of soy sauce production and is now even more famous for its olive groves.

Shodoshima draws visitors with its Mediterranean vibe, offering beaches, resorts, coastal scenery, and a mountainous interior home to one of Japan's most celebrated gorges, Kankakei Gorge. The island is also known as the filming location of a popular movie.

Shodoshima is one of the venues for the Setouchi Triennale art festival. Permanent art installations from past festivals, including several outdoor works, can be viewed year-round. They are scattered across the island, with most concentrated around the port towns along the southern coast.
