What to know

Takaoka Castle Park (高岡古城公園, Takaoka Kojō Kōen) is a central park in Takaoka built on the grounds of a short-lived early Edo Period castle (1603–1868). While the castle itself is gone, remnants of its stone foundations remain, and the moats now offer scenic boat cruises. The park features expansive lawns perfect for picnics, wooded walking trails, and over a thousand cherry trees that bloom in early to mid April, making it a popular hanami destination.

The castle was demolished in 1615, just a few years after construction, due to the Tokugawa Shogunate's policy allowing only one castle per feudal domain. At the time, Takaoka was part of the Kaga Domain, controlled by the powerful Maeda Clan from Kanazawa Castle.

Today, the park houses several points of interest. Imizu Shrine, a serene shrine within the old castle bailey, has a torii gate made from wooden beams that once belonged to the Ise Shrines before their 2013 rebuilding. The outer torii is bronze, reflecting the city's metal casting heritage.

In the park's south corner, the Takaoka Municipal Museum recounts local history. Although exhibits are in Japanese only, admission is free, and a small display compares the Takaoka Daibutsu with Nara's Great Buddha of Todaiji Temple. Other exhibits highlight prominent regional families.

A short walk from the park, the Takaoka Art Museum features the Fujiko F. Fujio Hometown Art Gallery, showcasing works by the famous animator born in Takaoka, creator of the beloved Doraemon series. The museum also displays art by local artists and hosts temporary exhibitions.

Takaoka Castle Park is a 15-minute walk from Takaoka Station. Alternatively, take the tram to Hirokoji (10 minutes, 200 yen one way, frequent departures), then walk five minutes to the park.
