What to know
In 2026, the fair was held from April 22 to May 5.
The Tonami Tulip Fair (となみチューリップフェア) is an annual flower festival in Tonami City near Takaoka in Toyama Prefecture. Held at Tonami Tulip Park, the fair runs for two weeks in late April and early May, showcasing some three million tulips in all colors and varieties.
Tonami lies directly south of Takaoka and has a tulip history dating back to 1918, when cultivation first began in the area. Today, the city is Japan's leading producer of tulip bulbs, growing over 250 varieties. The annual fair celebrates Tonami's floral achievements and pays homage to the tulip.
The fair includes several large flowerbeds with colorful tulips viewable from elevated platforms (including a tulip-shaped observation tower), a picturesque pond with floating flowerbeds, a corner displaying hundreds of tulip varieties with Japanese explanations, and the Tulip Aroma Garden featuring fragrant varieties.
The Tonami Tulip Gallery (Tulip Shikisaikan) is a large exhibition hall that is part of the fair but also open year-round, allowing indoor tulip viewing. Besides flower displays, the gallery includes a museum covering all aspects of tulips and cultivation, with some English explanations. From Takaoka Station or Shin-Takaoka Station, take the JR Johana Line to Tonami Station (20-25 minutes, 240 yen one way, covered by the Japan Rail Pass, one train per hour). Tonami Tulip Park is about one kilometer northeast of the station. During the fair, free shuttle buses run frequently between the station and the park.
