What to know
Akihabara (秋葉原), often called Akiba after a former local shrine, is a central Tokyo district renowned for its countless electronics shops and as the heart of Japan's otaku (diehard fan) culture. Many stores dedicated to anime and manga are scattered among the electronics retailers. On Sundays, Chuo Dori, the main thoroughfare, is closed to cars from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM (until 5:00 PM from October to March).
In recent years, Akihabara has undergone redevelopment, adding large modern buildings to the mix of small and medium-sized shops. The most prominent is the massive Yodobashi electronics store right next to the station.
Hundreds of electronics shops line Chuo Dori and the bustling side streets, from tiny one-person stalls specializing in a single component to big retailers. They sell everything from the latest computers, cameras, TVs, phones, electronics parts, and home appliances to second-hand goods and electronic junk.
Chain stores like Sofmap and Laox operate multiple specialized branches along the main roads, while small independent shops hide in the side streets. The only mega-store is the Yodobashi Camera complex on the station's east side.
Be aware that some electronics are intended only for use in Japan due to voltage and technical differences, Japanese documentation, and limited warranties. However, many stores also carry international models for overseas use and offer tax-free shopping to foreign tourists.
Akihabara's character has constantly evolved over the decades and continues to change. In recent years, it has become a center of Japanese otaku and anime culture, with dozens of stores specializing in anime, manga, retro video games, figurines, card games, and other collectibles filling the spaces between electronics retailers.
