Ameyoko

Visitor guide for the Ameyoko market street in Tokyo.

What to know

Ameyoko (アメ横) is a lively market street running alongside the Yamanote Line tracks between Okachimachi and Ueno stations. Its name is short for "Ameya Yokocho" (candy store alley), reflecting its origins as a place where sweets were sold. Alternatively, "Ame" can also mean "America," as the street was once a bustling black market after World War II, offering many American goods.

Today, Ameyoko is packed with shops selling clothing, bags, cosmetics, fresh fish, dried foods, and spices. Opening hours vary by store, but most open around 10:00 and close around 20:00. Many shops close on selected Wednesdays.

The market stretches from Ueno to Okachimachi Station, following the JR Yamanote and Keihin-Tohoku train lines. It's also a short walk from Ueno-Okachimachi Station on the Oedo Subway Line.
