Fuji Five Lakes (Fujigoko)

Travel guide for the Fujigoko, the Fuji Five Lake area at the northern base of Mount Fuji.

What to know

The Fuji Five Lakes (富士五湖, Fujigoko) region sits at the northern base of Mount Fuji, about 1000 meters above sea level, surrounding the lakes Kawaguchiko, Saiko, Yamanakako, Shojiko, and Motosuko. It offers some of the best close-up views of Mount Fuji and serves as a popular base for climbing the mountain.

Fujigoko is a well-known lake resort area where outdoor activities like hiking, camping, fishing, and snow sports are popular. The area also boasts numerous hot springs, museums, and Fuji Q Highland, one of Japan's top amusement parks featuring record-breaking roller coasters.

Among the five lakes, Lake Kawaguchiko is the most accessible and offers the most attractions for the average foreign traveler. The other four lakes are less developed and harder to reach by public transport.
