Ikaho Onsen

Travel guide for Ikaho Onsen, one of Japan's most famous hot spring resorts, known for its iconic stone stairs and iron-rich thermal waters.

What to know

Ikaho Onsen (伊香保温泉) is a hot spring town on the eastern slopes of Mount Haruna. Its reddish-brown, iron-rich thermal waters make it one of Gunma Prefecture's four most famous hot spring resorts, alongside Kusatsu, Minakami, and Shima Onsen.

The atmospheric old town centers on a 300-meter stone staircase that climbs through the middle of town, lined with ryokan, retro game arcades, and shops. It retains a nostalgic Showa Period (1926–1989) ambiance.

A few kilometers outside Ikaho, Mizusawa Kannon is a popular temple known for the udon noodles sold at restaurants along its approach. Mount Haruna, with its beautiful caldera lake, is also easily combined with a visit to Ikaho.
