What to know

The Izu Peninsula (伊豆半島, Izu Hantō) is a popular resort area known for its hot springs, beautiful coastlines, beaches, mild climate, and scenic mountainous interior. Located about 100 kilometers southwest of Tokyo, its proximity makes it a favorite weekend getaway, and it's well connected to the capital by train. Mount Fuji lies roughly 50 kilometers to the north and can be seen from the peninsula's western coast.

The more developed eastern coast features larger cities like Atami, Ito, and Shimoda, which are popular for their beaches and hot springs. In contrast, the southern and western coasts are less developed and known for rugged coastlines, best seen around Irozaki and Dogashima.
