Kanda

Visitor guide for Kanda, a central city district of Tokyo.

What to know

Kanda (神田) is a city district in Tokyo, located northeast of the Imperial Palace. It's not a major tourist hub but rather a typical local area with residential streets and numerous universities. Historically an academic center, Kanda attracts a young crowd. It was once home to a Confucian school, and the Yushima Seido, a shrine dedicated to the great Chinese philosopher, still stands today.

Still, the district boasts several interesting neighborhoods, including Ochanomizu with its musical instrument shops, Jimbocho known for its bookstores, and the famous electronics and anime mecca Akihabara. Kanda also hosts the Kanda Myojin Shrine and its Kanda Festival, one of Tokyo's three most important festivals.

Ochanomizu Station on the JR Chuo Line, JR Sobu Line, and Marunouchi Subway Line is the closest station to most points of interest. It can be reached from Tokyo Station in 5 minutes (160 yen) or from Shinjuku Station in 10 minutes (210 yen) via the JR Chuo Line.
