What to know
The Sumida Aquarium (すみだ水族館, Sumida Suizokukan) is a highlight of Tokyo Skytree Town. This modern, medium-sized aquarium showcases over 10,000 marine creatures on the 5th and 6th floors of Tokyo Solamachi, the shopping and entertainment complex at the base of Tokyo Skytree.
Its centerpiece is a 350,000-liter tank—Japan's largest open indoor tank—home to dozens of penguins and several fur seals. Thick, clear glass walls with minimal visible supports offer unobstructed views from almost every angle. The aquarium also features an excellent jellyfish display and research lab, plus tanks representing habitats around Tokyo Bay, the Izu Islands, and the Ogasawara Islands.
The entrance is on the 5th floor of Tokyo Skytree Town, between Tokyo Skytree Station (Tobu Isesaki Line) and Oshiage Station (Asakusa Subway Line, Hanzomon Subway Line, Keisei Oshiage Line). It's also a 20-minute walk across the Sumida River from Asakusa.
Tokyo Skytree is accessible by direct buses from Ueno Station (30 minutes, 230 yen, every 30-60 minutes), Tokyo Disney Resort (45-55 minutes, 800 yen, every 60 minutes), and Haneda Airport (50-70 minutes, 1000 yen, every 1-3 hours).
