Tomamu Ski Resort

Large ski resort in central Hokkaido

What to know

Tomamu (トマム) is a modern, high-end ski resort located in central Hokkaido, about 90 minutes by train south of Sapporo. The resort spans two mountains and offers a wide variety of trails. Besides beginner slopes and groomed runs, Tomamu caters to advanced skiers with expert courses, a well-maintained terrain park, and designated tree skiing within resort boundaries.

Beyond skiing, Tomamu provides numerous winter activities including snowmobiling, snow rafting, snowshoeing, and curling. Lessons are available for beginner skiers and snowboarders, and a kids' snow park features ski lessons, a snow playground, and sledding for younger children.

Tomamu is an excellent choice for a multi-day ski trip, with various accommodation options such as the high-rise hotels of Hoshino Resort and the all-inclusive Club Med Tomamu. The resort also boasts a large indoor wave pool, hot springs, spa services, and several restaurants. Free shuttle buses connect the different areas of the resort.

Evenings can be spent at Tomamu's illuminated Ice Village (December 10, 2025 – March 14, 2026), a collection of domes made entirely of snow and ice. These domes house a bar, shop, wedding chapel, a one-room hotel, a ramen restaurant, and more. There is also an ice skating rink. Entry is free for resort guests, while non-guests pay a small admission fee (600 yen).

JR limited express trains run every 2–3 hours between Sapporo and Tomamu stations. The one-way trip takes about 100 minutes, costs 5,880 yen, and is fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass and Hokkaido Rail Pass. Seat reservations are mandatory. Travelers from Shin-Chitose Airport must transfer trains at Minami-Chitose Station. Free shuttle buses run between Tomamu Station and the ski resort.

During ski season, direct ski buses connect Tomamu to Sapporo's Shin-Chitose Airport (120 minutes, 6,000 yen one way, reservations required, departures every 2 hours). Less frequent buses link Tomamu to central Sapporo, Niseko, Rusutsu, Furano, and Asahikawa.
