What to know
The Date Museum (伊達博物館, Date Hakubutsukan) honors the Date clan, who governed Uwajima for over 250 years during the Edo Period (1603–1868). The first lord of Uwajima was Date Hidemune, a descendant of the main Date family based in Sendai. Under successive generations of Date lords, Uwajima flourished and expanded.
The museum displays a wide range of artifacts and personal belongings of the Date family, including weapons, scroll paintings, family crests, writings, and everyday items. A highlight is the impressive collection of beautiful folding screens (byobu) adorned with precious paintings. Historical maps of Uwajima show how the castle town has changed over time, especially the waterfront west of the city, which was dramatically altered by land reclamation.
Located near Tenshaen Garden, the Date Museum is a 20–30 minute walk from Uwajima Station. Alternatively, Uwajima Bus runs hourly services from the station to the Tenshaen-mae bus stop (10 minutes, 160 yen one way), just steps from the museum.
