Mount Yoshino

Visitor guide for the cherry blossoms (sakura) of Yoshinoyama in Yoshino, Nara Prefecture.

What to know

Mount Yoshino (吉野山, Yoshinoyama) in Nara Prefecture has been Japan's most celebrated cherry blossom destination for centuries. The first trees were planted on its slopes over 1,300 years ago, and today the mountain is home to roughly 30,000 cherry trees of many varieties, especially the Yamazakura.

Rather than a standalone peak, Yoshinoyama is a north-facing slope divided into four areas: Shimo Senbon (lower 1,000 trees) at the base, Naka Senbon (middle 1,000 trees), Kami Senbon (upper 1,000 trees), and Oku Senbon (inner 1,000 trees) at the top. Visitors can enjoy the blossoms as they climb, passing through Yoshino's tourist town with its temples and shrines, and stopping for hanami in parks and viewpoints along the way.

Cherry blossoms on Mount Yoshino typically begin opening in late March or early April, reaching full bloom from early to mid April. Due to the elevation range, blooming is staggered by a few days between the lower, middle, and upper areas as the blossom front moves up the mountain. The trees in Oku Senbon bloom considerably later. Be aware that the start date and length of the season can vary significantly from year to year depending on weather.

The Shimo Senbon area covers the base of the mountain around Yoshino Station and the lower part of town. The Yoshino Ropeway provides a quick ascent from the station to the town, but wait times can be very long during peak season. Many cherry trees line the road up to the town, making the walk an attractive alternative to the ropeway.

The Naka Senbon area covers the rest of the town along the mountain ridge. This is where most of Yoshino's accommodations, shops, restaurants, temples, and shrines are located, including Kinpusenji Temple and Yoshimizu Shrine. The view up the mountain from Yoshimizu Shrine is especially famous.

Near the top of the Naka Senbon area lies Naka Senbon Park, one of the best spots for hanami picnics under the trees. The park spans several small hills covered in cherry trees, offering views of even more blossoms. In good weather, the atmosphere here is delightful.
