Autumn leaves (koyo)

Beginner

Colorful autumn leaves, known as koyo in Japanese, are as iconic to the fall season as cherry blossoms are to spring. For centuries, viewing the vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows has been a beloved pastime, drawing crowds to famous spots in both mountains and cities across Japan.

The koyo front begins its southward journey from Hokkaido in mid-September, gradually reaching central and southern Japan by late November. Even in Tokyo and Kyoto, some trees retain their brilliant hues well into December.
