Oyakuen Garden

Visitor guide for Oyakuen Garden in Aizu Wakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture

What to know

Oyakuen (御薬園) is a charming Japanese landscape garden featuring a central pond, perfect for a peaceful stroll in Aizu. Its name means "Medicinal Herb Garden," a title it earned in the 18th century when the local feudal lord promoted the cultivation of medicinal plants among citizens. In addition to the pond garden, Oyakuen maintains a herb garden where hundreds of medicinal plant varieties continue to thrive.

The main garden showcases meticulously tended greenery arranged around a pond. A winding path encircles the pond, offering the best way to appreciate the garden's beauty. Several buildings within the grounds may catch travelers' interest: a tea house, a souvenir shop, and a dining room.

The Aizu Loop Bus stops at "Oyakuen" bus stop (30 minutes from Aizu-Wakamatsu Station), located just outside the garden's entrance gate.
