What to know
The Fukushima Prefectural Museum (Fukushima Kenritsu Hakubutsukan) in Aizu-Wakamatsu houses a comprehensive permanent collection tracing Japan's entire history, from Jomon Period archaeological finds (300 BC) to everyday items from the 1950s. The spacious building allows for impressive displays.
Alongside the permanent exhibition, the museum also hosts rotating temporary exhibitions. It offers an engaging and informative overview of Japanese history and culture, with a focus on Fukushima Prefecture's unique features.
The museum is located just outside the outer moats of Tsuruga Castle Park. The nearest Aizu Loop Bus stop is "Tsurugajo Sannomaru" (20 minutes from Aizu-Wakamatsu Station), right outside the museum.
