What to know
Amami Oshima's coastline is dotted with beautiful, uncrowded beaches perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and snorkeling. Most beaches offer little more than a parking lot and public restrooms, if any facilities at all. The best time to swim is from May to October, when both air and water temperatures are pleasant. Be cautious of strong currents that can sweep you out to sea, and watch out for poisonous marine life.
For even more secluded spots, head to Kakeromajima Island, just a short ferry ride south of Amami Oshima.
