What to know
Amami Oshima (奄美大島) is the largest island in the Satsunan chain stretching between Kyushu and Okinawa, part of Kagoshima Prefecture. Its tropical climate, pristine beaches, and lush vegetation—including mangrove forests and giant ferns—give it a character much like the Okinawan islands to the south.
The island boasts beautiful white-sand beaches and clear, warm waters perfect for summer swimming. Compared to Okinawa, the beaches here are less crowded, offering a more relaxed atmosphere. Many beaches are ideal for swimming and sunbathing, while others provide excellent snorkeling opportunities.
Beyond its natural beauty, Amami Oshima has a rich cultural heritage and unique local cuisine. The island is famous for its revered Oshima Tsumugi silk, which has been used for centuries to craft high-quality kimonos. Like Okinawa, the best weather on Amami Oshima typically occurs from late June through August.
