Appi Kogen Ski Resort

Leading ski resort in the Tohoku Region

What to know

Appi Kogen Ski Resort sits in the Appi Highlands (安比高原, Appi Kōgen) of Iwate Prefecture, about 50 kilometers north of Morioka. It ranks among the best ski resorts in the Tohoku Region, offering a wide variety of long, broad ski runs that include groomed and ungroomed slopes as well as mogul fields. The ski season typically runs from early December to early May.

The resort's courses stretch across the slopes of Mount Maemori (1305 meters). At the summit, an observation point provides panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including Mount Iwate and Mount Hachimantai on clear days.

Beyond skiing, the resort features a terrain park for snowboarders and a family park with sleds, snow tubes, and mini courses for children. At the base of the slopes, the resort center offers rental equipment, shops, and dining options. A ski school provides lessons for both skiing and snowboarding.

Several large resort hotels are located at the base of the slopes, including the ANA Crowne Plaza Resort Appi Kogen and the ANA InterContinental Appi Kogen Resort. Additional accommodation is available at a few pensions in the small town below the resort hotels.

The easiest way to reach Appi Kogen is from Morioka Station, about 2.5 hours north of Tokyo via the Tohoku Shinkansen (approximately 15,500 yen one way, covered by the Japan Rail Pass, JR East Pass, and JR East South Hokkaido Pass).

During the main season, buses run hourly from Morioka Station to Appi Kogen Ski Resort, taking 1–2 hours. In shoulder seasons, only one bus per day operates. The one-way trip takes about one hour and costs 1,500 yen. This fare is not covered by JR passes.

Appi Kogen Station is about three kilometers from the ski resort, with direct trains from Morioka every 2–3 hours. The one-way ride takes one hour and costs 1,220 yen. Since the trains partially use non-JR tracks, Japan Rail Pass holders must pay a supplement of 690 yen. However, holders of a JR East Pass or JR East South Hokkaido Pass do not need to pay the supplement. Staying guests can request a pick-up service from the station, but there is no public transportation.
