What to know
Aomori City (青森) is the northernmost prefectural capital on Honshu, Japan's main island. Once the primary ferry departure point for Hokkaido, this port town has seen fewer travelers since the Seikan Undersea Railway Tunnel opened and cheap flights became available. Many now bypass the city, but Aomori remains famous for its spectacular Nebuta Matsuri summer festival.
