Visitor guide for the Aomori Museum of Art in Aomori City.

What to know

The Aomori Museum of Art (Aomori Kenritsu Bijutsukan) is a contemporary art museum located just outside downtown Aomori City. The building houses both temporary and permanent exhibits, and its design is inspired by the neighboring Sannai Maruyama Jomon Archaeological Sites. Rather than being built entirely above ground, the exhibition spaces are sunk into the earth like archaeological trenches, while the white-painted museum building resembles tents stretched over the trenches.

The permanent collection includes three enormous paintings by Marc Chagall, originally created as backdrops for a ballet performance, displayed in a room with 19-meter-high ceilings. Other permanent works include woodblock prints and paintings by Munakata Shiko, the pop art and cartoon-like pieces of Yoshitomo Nara, and an 8.5-meter-tall Aomori-Ken dog statue also by Nara.

The museum is next to the Kenritsu Bijutsukanmae bus stop, a 20-minute, 280 yen bus ride from Aomori Station. It is also a five-minute walk from the Sannai Maruyama Jomon Archaeological Site.
