Hot Spring Baths (Onsen)

Travel guide for the hot springs (onsen) of Beppu.

What to know

Beppu is one of Japan's most celebrated hot spring resorts, boasting eight distinct spring areas: Beppu Onsen, Kannawa Onsen, Myoban Onsen, Kankaiji Onsen, Hamawaki Onsen, Kamegawa Onsen, Horita Onsen, and Shibaseki Onsen. Each area features public baths and ryokan with bathing facilities, and together they produce more hot spring water than any other onsen resort in the country.

What truly sets Beppu apart is not just the abundance of thermal waters but the incredible variety of bath types. Beyond conventional hot water baths, visitors can enjoy sand baths (buried in naturally heated sand), steam baths (heated by hot spring steam), and mud baths (muddy hot water baths).

Below is a list of some of Beppu's best baths. More baths can be found in nearby Yufuin.
