Nariwa Museum

Visitor guide for the Nariwa Museum in Takahashi.

What to know

The Nariwa Museum (成羽美術館, Nariwa Bijutsukan) is an art museum in Nariwa Town, not far from Takahashi. Designed by world-renowned architect Ando Tadao in 1994, the museum showcases his signature style of raw concrete and sharp geometric lines.

The main exhibition features paintings by Nariwa-born Western-style painter Kojima Torajiro (1881-1929) and ancient Egyptian artifacts from his private collection. Kojima's works are also displayed at the Ohara Museum in Kurashiki.

On permanent display are fossils from the Nariwa region, home to one of Japan's oldest forests, over 200 million years old. The museum also includes a small shop and a cafe overlooking an inner water garden.

Nariwa Museum is about a 20-minute bus ride from Bitchu-Takahashi Station. Get off at Nariwa (成羽, about 20 minutes, 440 yen one way, every 1-2 hours), a few steps from the museum.
