What to know
During the Nara and Heian Periods (710–1185), Dazaifu was the political hub of Kyushu, and a grand complex of government offices was built to administer the island. Designed to showcase the authority and prestige of the ruling government, the complex featured stately pillars, gates, and administrative buildings arranged in a symmetrical grid, all painted in striking vermilion red.
After Dazaifu lost its political importance, the buildings were eventually destroyed. Today, the site is a public park known as Dazaifu Seichō-ato (大宰府政庁跡). The remaining foundations give visitors a sense of the scale of the original government offices that stood over a thousand years ago. Nearby, the Dazaifu Exhibition Hall displays archaeological finds and provides further insight into the site's history.
The ruins are a ten-minute walk from Tofuromae Station or a 30-minute walk from Dazaifu Station. They are also accessible via the Dazaifu Liner buses, which run between Fukuoka and Dazaifu (5 minutes, 100 yen from Dazaifu Station, 2–4 buses per hour).
