Shiraito Falls

Visitor guide for the Shiraito Falls, a stunning waterfall in the Fujinomiya area on the western slopes of Mount Fuji.

What to know

Shiraito Falls (白糸の滝, Shiraito no Taki) lie in the southwestern foothills of Mount Fuji. Considered one of Japan's most beautiful waterfalls, this 150-meter-wide cascade is fed by the volcano's spring water and pours over a 20-meter-high cliff in thin white streams that look like hanging silk threads—hence its name. A short walking trail from the road leads to the base of the falls in just a few minutes.

Along the path to the falls, several souvenir shops line the trail. You'll also get nice views of Otodome Falls, another thundering 25-meter-high column of water. The area is best in summer when the waterfalls are full from winter snowmelt off Mount Fuji and the greenery is lush, and during autumn (usually mid to late November) when the leaves change color.

Buses between Shin-Fuji Station, Fujinomiya Station, and the Fuji Five Lakes stop at Shiraito Falls. The one-way trip from Kawaguchiko Station takes about 80 minutes and costs 2000 yen; from Shin-Fuji Station it takes about one hour and costs 1220 yen. However, there are only 3-4 buses per day.

More frequent local buses run once or twice per hour between Fujinomiya Station and Shiraito Falls (30 minutes, 710 yen one way).
