Complete visitor guide for the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, one of the world's top dinosaur museums located near Fukui City.

What to know

The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum (福井県立恐竜博物館, Fukui Kenritsu Kyōryū Hakubutsukan) is a world-class museum dedicated to dinosaur research and education. Recognized as one of the finest dinosaur museums globally, it is the largest of its kind in Japan. Located 25 kilometers east of Fukui City in Katsuyama City, the museum sits at the heart of Japan's dinosaur research, near the country's largest and most productive excavation site, just a few kilometers away.

The museum spans four floors. The main floor's vast open space houses the centerpiece Dinosaur World exhibition, featuring over 40 dinosaur skeletons with excellent English explanations. Highlights include local species like Fukuiraptor and Fukuisaurus, discovered nearby, along with several life-sized animatronic dinosaurs, including a realistic Tyrannosaurus Rex that greets visitors at the entrance.

The smaller Earth Sciences exhibition on the same floor offers hands-on exhibits, videos, and familiar objects to teach about the Earth and the emergence of life. Overlooking Dinosaur World from a balcony, the History of Life corner displays more fossils and life-sized dinosaur models, illustrating evolution from single-celled organisms to humans. A standout is the display on how dinosaurs evolved into birds.

The museum also features a hands-on zone where visitors can touch real fossils, and a research laboratory where scientists and technicians clean fossils behind glass. Additional facilities include a movie theater, restaurant, museum shop, and an annex for special temporary exhibitions. Several dinosaur models are placed outdoors around the museum grounds.

To get there, take the Echizen Railway from Fukui Station to Katsuyama Station (one hour, 820 yen one way, every 30 minutes), then transfer to a community bus to the museum. Get off at Kyoryu Hakubutsukan-mae bus stop (15 minutes, 300 yen, 1-3 buses/hour). A taxi from the station takes about 10 minutes and costs around 1800 yen.
