Heisenji Hakusan Shrine

Visitor guide for Heisenji Hakusan Shrine, an atmospheric Shinto shrine in the forests of Fukui Prefecture.

What to know

Heisenji Hakusan Shrine (平泉寺白山神社, Heisenji Hakusan Jinja) is an important Shinto shrine nestled in the forested foothills of Mount Hakusan in Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture. It is renowned for its moss-covered grounds and tranquil atmosphere.

Founded in 717 as a Buddhist temple, it once served as a base for pilgrimages to Mount Hakusan, the sacred mountain it is dedicated to. By the 1500s, it had grown into a vast and politically powerful temple complex, housing thousands of monks and warrior monks within its grounds.

After being burned down and rebuilt several times, the complex was ultimately destroyed following uprisings in 1574 and never regained its former prominence. During the Meiji Period (1868–1912), when Buddhism was forcibly separated from Shinto, the remaining structures—a mix of Buddhist and Shinto buildings—were converted into a Shinto shrine. It remains a shrine today, but still incorporates the former temple's name, Heisenji, into its title.

The main grounds of Heisenji Hakusan Shrine are spacious, serene, and largely unattended. From the entrance, a 600-meter path gently ascends through mossy spaces lined with tall cedar trees, passing several torii gates and a pond before reaching the prayer hall. Immediately behind the prayer hall stands the main hall, flanked by two smaller buildings arranged to represent Mount Hakusan's three peaks.

From this point, visitors can walk a further 400 meters into the forest to a small inner shrine called Sannomiya, which also marks the start of the traditional pilgrimage trail to the summit of Mount Hakusan.

Adjacent to the south of the forested shrine grounds, visitors can explore the overgrown ruins that remain from the complex's larger past. The area has a pleasant rural feel, though only a few remnants are visible.
