What to know
Canal City Hakata (キャナルシティ博多) is a sprawling shopping and entertainment complex that brands itself as a "city within a city." It features around 250 shops, cafes, and restaurants, a theater, cinemas, the Grand Hyatt Fukuoka hotel, and a canal that winds through the complex.
Shoppers will find plenty to explore, from unique Japanese boutiques to branches of international brands. The dining scene is equally diverse, with Japanese and international options at reasonable prices. On the fifth floor, the "Ramen Stadium" gathers eight ramen shops serving noodle dishes from across Japan, including the local favorite Hakata Ramen.
The complex is designed with creative colors and shapes to create a spacious and engaging atmosphere. An artificial canal runs through the center of the five-story complex, opening up the space. At the canal's center, a fountain puts on water shows every 30 minutes from 10:00 to 22:00.
Canal City Hakata is a short walk from Kushida Shrine Station on the Nanakuma Subway Line (1 minute, 210 yen from Hakata Station). Alternatively, it's about a 15-minute walk from Hakata Station or 20 minutes from Tenjin Station.
