What to know
A few kilometers from Gujo's town center, three limestone caves await exploration. The most popular is Otaki Cave (大滝鍾乳洞, Ōtaki Shōnyūdō), which buzzes with souvenir shops and nagashi somen noodle stands in summer.
Otaki Cave, meaning 'large waterfall cave,' is named for its 30-meter underground waterfall—the tallest in Japan. A small cable car takes visitors to the cave entrance, where a well-marked 30-minute walking course begins. The route includes steep, narrow staircases that may be challenging for some.
Otaki Cave is not reachable by public transport. By car or taxi from central Gujo, it takes about 20 minutes (taxi fare around 5000 yen one way).
