Gujo Hachiman

Small town in rural Japan with castle

What to know

Gujo Hachiman (郡上八幡, Gujō Hachiman) is a small riverside town in Gifu Prefecture, famous for its crystal-clear waterways and the lively Gujo Odori summer dance festival. The town was founded in the 16th century after the construction of Hachiman Castle.

Gujo's water system still works much as it did in the 1600s. Strolling through town, you'll see canals, fountains, and waterways used for washing rice and vegetables. Locals work together to keep the canals clean and the water fresh, making Gujo's drinking water a point of pride.

Gujo Odori is a major summer dance festival held in Gujo Hachiman. It began over 400 years ago and now runs for 31 festival nights from July to September. During the four days of Obon in mid-August, dancing continues all night long.

Gujo is also a leading producer of food replicas in Japan. Many of the plastic food samples used in restaurant displays are made here. Visitors can try making wax shrimp tempura in local workshops.
