What to know
Mount Hakodate (Hakodateyama) is a 334-meter wooded mountain at the southern tip of the peninsula that forms central Hakodate. On clear days and nights, the views from the summit are spectacular, ranking among Japan's three best night views alongside Nagasaki's Mount Inasa and Kobe's Mount Rokko.
The summit, reachable by ropeway, bus, or car, offers free observation decks, souvenir shops, a cafe, and a restaurant.
The Hakodateyama Ropeway departs from the Motomachi district. Its lower station is a 10-minute walk from the Jujigai tram stop (5 minutes, 210 yen from Hakodate Station) or a direct Hakodate Bus from Hakodate Station (10 minutes, 250 yen, 1-2 buses per hour in the evenings). A round-trip ropeway ticket costs 1800 yen, one-way 1200 yen. The ropeway runs every 15 minutes from 10:00 to 22:00 (until 21:00 from October to mid-April).
From late April to mid-November, direct buses run multiple times per hour between Hakodate Station and the summit in the evenings (30 minutes, 500 yen one way). These buses are operated by Hakodate Bus and are covered by day passes for trams and buses.
A toll road to the summit is open from mid-April to mid-November, but it is closed to private cars in the evenings from 17:00 to 22:00 (16:00 to 21:00 in October and November).
