What to know
Onuma Quasi National Park, located just 20 kilometers north of Hakodate, is famous for its scenic lakes dotted with small islands and the imposing Mount Komagatake volcano. The park's Japanese name is Ōnuma Kōen (大沼公園).
The park makes an easy day trip from Hakodate or a convenient stopover between Hakodate and Sapporo, as most limited express trains on that route call at Onuma Koen Station, which sits right in the middle of the park.
The most beautiful part of the park lies between Lake Onuma (the 'large lake') and Lake Konuma (the 'small lake'), and is easily explored on foot. Several walking trails, ranging from 15 to 60 minutes, take you around peninsulas and across small bridges connecting the islands.
Bicycle rentals are available (typically 500 yen per hour or 1000 yen per day). A cycling route circles Lake Onuma (about 10 km), though it mostly follows the main road rather than the lakeshore. Still, it's a pleasant way to see the area.
In warmer months, sightseeing boats depart every 40 minutes for a 30-minute cruise (1460 yen per person). Other activities include canoeing, tennis, golf, fishing, and camping.
From Hakodate Station, Onuma Koen Station is about 30 minutes by limited express train (1840 yen, seat reservation required) or 40 minutes by local train (680 yen, no reservation needed). Most limited express trains from Hakodate to Sapporo stop briefly at Onuma Koen Station.
