Enoura Observatory

Enoura Observatory (江之浦測候所, Enoura Sokkōjo) is a unique open-air museum featuring contemporary art installations, striking architecture, and scenic viewpoints in the coastal hills south of central Odawara City, not far from Hakone. The artworks are designed to harmonize with the natural terrain, and several structures are aligned with the sun's path.

The spacious observatory overlooks the Pacific Ocean and is divided into two areas. The main Meigetsu Gate Area houses the art gallery and observation platforms. The 100-meter-long gallery and its viewing platform align with the sunrise on the summer solstice, while a steel tunnel and a glass stage face the sunrise on the winter solstice. Stone sculptures from across Japan are also displayed here.

The Bamboo Grove Area is a secondary section about a 5–10 minute walk away. True to its name, it is forested with bamboo, citrus trees, and evergreens. Walking paths with slopes and steps lead to highlights such as the installation "Mathematical Model 0010" and a shed containing fossils and excavated tools.

Exploring at a leisurely pace takes about 1–2 hours. Advance reservations are recommended, with two admission slots to choose from. Upon arrival, visitors first go to the reception building to register and receive an informative guidebook before exploring independently.

The best access is from Nebukawa Station (8 minutes, 210 yen one way from Odawara Station) on the JR Tokaido Main Line. A free shuttle bus runs between the station and the observatory; check departure times on the official website in advance. Alternatively, it's about a 45-minute walk.
