Visitor guide for the Okada Museum of Art in Hakone.

What to know

The Okada Museum of Art (岡田美術館, Okada Bijutsukan) is a private museum that houses an extensive collection of art spanning from ancient times to the modern era. Opened in 2013, it showcases a wide range of East Asian ceramics, sculptures, and paintings within a spacious, contemporary facility set amid expansive grounds featuring a Japanese garden, a teahouse, and a café with a hot spring foot bath.

The core of the museum's collection is its vast array of Chinese and Japanese ceramics and sculptures, which fill the first two floors. Highlights include ancient Chinese bronzes, Tang and Ming dynasty porcelain, and early Japanese pottery. The upper floors are dedicated to Japanese art, presenting various art forms and periods. Most exhibits have labels with basic information in English, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese.

Upon entry, note that security is strict: visitors must store phones, cameras, bags, and even stationery in free lockers at the entrance.

The Okada Museum is just a short walk from the Kowakien (小涌園) bus stop. Frequent buses from Hakone-Yumoto Station (25 minutes, 730 yen), Hakonemachi (20 minutes, 750 yen), or Gora Station (5 minutes, 250 yen) serve Kowakien. Hakone Tozan buses are covered by the Hakone Free Pass, but Izuhakone buses are not.
