POLA Museum

Visitor guide for the POLA Museum in Hakone.

What to know

The POLA Museum of Art (ポーラ美術館, Pōla Bijutsukan) was opened in 2002 by the POLA group, a renowned skincare and beauty company, to showcase the extensive private art collection of its late owner, Suzuki Tsuneshi.

Nestled in a forest of 300-year-old beech trees, the museum is built largely underground to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings, despite being constructed of concrete and glass.

The collection features modern and contemporary paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and glassware by mostly Japanese and European artists. Alongside temporary exhibitions, the museum rotates works from its permanent collection, including masterpieces by Cézanne, Monet, Picasso, and Renoir.

The museum is a short bus ride from Gora Station, the last stop on the Hakone Tozan Railway. Take a Hakone Tozan bus bound for Shissei Kaen and alight at the Pola Bijutsukan bus stop (15 minutes, 310 yen, 4–5 buses per hour, covered by the Hakone Free Pass).
