What to know
Hakone Detached Palace (Kyū Hakone Rikyū) was originally a summer retreat for the Imperial Family, but it has since been opened to the public. It sits on the southern shore of Lake Ashinoko, on the peninsula between Moto-Hakone and Hakone-machi.
Only a small, simple building remains of the original palace complex, and it is unfurnished. The surrounding park, known as Onshi Hakone Park, features pleasant walking paths and scenic views of Lake Ashinoko and Mount Fuji, when the weather is clear. Visibility is generally better in the colder months and during early morning or late evening.
The palace is located on the peninsula between Moto-Hakone and Hakone-machi, and can be reached from either town with a 10-15 minute walk.
