Mishima Candle Shop

Visitor guide for the Mishima Traditional Japanese Candle Shop in Furukawa.

What to know

The Mishima Candle Shop (三嶋和ろうそく店, Mishima Warōsokuten) in Furukawa has been crafting and selling traditional Japanese candles (warosoku) for over 240 years. Housed in a historic building in Furukawa's old town, the shop offers a peek into its fascinating interior. At certain times, you can watch candle-making demonstrations right in the store.

This candle shop served as a filming location for the popular NHK morning drama "Sakura" (2002). In the series, the heroine Sakura lived in the house as part of a homestay program while teaching at the local school.

The shop is about a five-minute walk from the station.
