Takumikan Craft Museum

The Takumikan Craft Museum showcases the rich tradition of Hida carpentry, featuring tools, local woods, and hands-on wooden puzzles.

What to know

The Hida Region, a mountainous area in northern Gifu Prefecture, includes Furukawa and Takayama. For centuries, it has been renowned for its high-quality timber and the skills of local carpenters.

Opened in 1989, the Takumikan Craft Museum (飛騨の匠文化館, Hida No Takumi Bunkakan) celebrates traditional Hida craftsmanship. Built by local carpenters using regional lumber and nail-free joinery techniques, the building itself is a work of art.

Inside, exhibits display traditional carpenter tools and various types of wood. A hands-on corner lets visitors try assembling wooden puzzles and joints—a surprisingly tricky challenge.

Located in Festival Square, a small public park in the town center, the museum is less than a 10-minute walk from the station.
