Neputa Mura

Visitor guide for the Neputa Mura in Hirosaki, a tourist complex dedicated to the city

What to know

Neputa Mura (ねぷた村), meaning "Neputa Village," is a museum showcasing Hirosaki's famous Neputa Matsuri festival and other local cultural highlights.

The Neputa Matsuri runs annually from August 1 to 7, coinciding with similar Neputa and Nebuta festivals across Aomori Prefecture. Its floats feature large painted screens depicting beautiful women, mythical warriors, and other themes, illuminated from within during parades. Several of these floats and screens are displayed at Neputa Mura.

Beyond the festival, Neputa Mura also exhibits other Hirosaki specialties, including the local shamisen instrument, traditional handicrafts, and vintage toys. The complex includes a Japanese garden and a 19th-century teahouse.

Neputa Mura is located next to the northeast corner of Hirosaki Park. The nearest Dotemachi Loop Bus stop is "Bunka Center-mae," a five-minute walk away. The less frequent Tamenobu Loop Bus stops at "Neputa Mura" but does not run in winter.
