What to know
During the Edo Period (1603-1868), Hirosaki (弘前) served as the political and cultural hub of the Tsugaru Region, which now forms the western part of Aomori Prefecture. Today, it remains one of the most culturally rich cities in northern Tohoku.
Hirosaki grew around Hirosaki Castle. Thousands of cherry trees surround the castle grounds, creating one of Japan's most breathtaking cherry blossom displays, typically from late April to early May. The city is also renowned for Tsugaru-jamisen, a local variation of the shamisen. You can experience this music live at select restaurants offering performances.
