What to know
Otemon Square (追手門広場, Ōtemon Hiroba), named after and located opposite the main gate of Hirosaki Castle, serves as the ideal starting point for exploring Hirosaki. The square houses a comprehensive tourist information center where visitors can pick up maps, brochures, and get recommendations on local attractions.
The square also features a souvenir shop, several restaurants, and a small exhibition showcasing local crafts and the Neputa Festival. Nearby, you'll find some of Hirosaki's early Western-style buildings, such as the former city library built in 1907. Although no longer in use, the library is open to the public.
Otemon Square sits just south of Hirosaki Park, next to City Hall. It's a 15-minute bus ride west of JR Hirosaki Station via the Dotemachi Loop Bus; get off at Shiyakusho-mae stop.
